An amazing, elegant crystal square tray by Dorothy C. Thorpe. Thorpe was an artist and designer (1901-1989) who produced several different types of tableware sets. A California artisan, she’s perhaps most well known for producing a line of Mid Century Modern glassware with a distinctive silver band around the edge – believe it’s known as Roly Poly.
We’re not sure where this tray fits in with her glassware work, but it’s a really great dish. It features a bumpy crackled crystal base on which sterling silver has been worked on in different patterns.
This tray measures about 11 inches square on each side. It has a few condition problems, most notably wear to the back side edges of the glass and the front silver decoration. There seems to be a very thin layer of sprayed on plastic or lacquer(?) that seems to be coming off in a few places. Still, it’s in remarkable condition for such a delicate and old tray. It still has the original sticker reading “Dorothy C. Thorpe Inc. California, Sterling Silver on Crystal”.
