Edward Winter Enamel

Fantastic, cranberry red enamel over copper small dish by Edward Winter. Winter was actually a famed American modern designer and enamelist, who pioneered techniques for enameling copper and other metals. We actually are not certain if this was made by Edward Winter or his wife Thelma – it is definitely one of the two and we lean toward this being a piece from Edward.

This is a very small square dish – we thought it might be an ashtray at first but it lacks the usual areas to hold cigarettes, so we think it’s a pin dish. It has a magenta or cranberry red variegated glaze, with spots of white toward the edges. Exterior of dish is a very dark brown with an unusual pattern of white lines. Fully signed on back with “Winter”. This would be a great addition to your collection of enamels, or would look nice in a midcentury modern home setting.

In great condition, with some minor flakes in the enamel on the edges of the dish. Some crazing within the glass, mostly on the edge corners. There are two small spots of blue on the interior bottom – we thought at first this might be paint, but it appears to be underneath or within the glaze. We’re certain this happened in manufacturing, but are mentioning it anyhow.

Dish measures about 4 inches square.
