Slender modern gold leaf vase by Howard Pierce who produced ceramics in California from the 40s up until the 90s. He worked first in Claremont and later moved to Joshua Tree, where he was quite influential in the community, producing a number of larger sculptures for the town.
Unmarked, but definitely Howard Pierce – most gold leaf items by Pierce do not have marks. These items actually appear to have red underneath them – this is an intentional method used to produce his gold leaf ceramics. We believe that the gold leaf was actually rubbed onto the pieces after they were fired – a truly time consuming process.
In good vintage condition, but with quite a bit of wear overall to the gold leaf – many areas where the red is visible. Please see the photos – this wear is consistent with items from Pierce we’ve seen.
Vase measures about 9.75″ tall and 3″ at widest point.
