ALL orders and item inquiries are now handled through email. We have found that this works better than a cart system, and in addition many of our customers appreciate this personal approach for purchases.
If you're interested in an item, send us a message with the items you're interested in, and your general location (zip code or country). We'll send an email back with a shipping quote. If it sounds good, then we'll either send a Paypal invoice to you, or we can discuss other payment options.
Payment OptionsPaypal is the easiest and preferred method of payment on the A La Modern website.
We currently do not accept money orders and business or personal checks.
Sorry, but we cannot handle direct credit card orders over the phone, or by processor. However, credit card orders can usually be processed through Paypal.
Sales TaxWe collect California sales tax on all orders shipped to addresses in California. We do not collect sales tax on any orders from other states. If you reside in a different state than California, you're responsible for any applicable local state taxes.
Sales / DiscountsFrom time to time, we may offer sales or discounts on items, orders or shipping. These sales and discounts are good only for the time specified, or until the item or group of items is sold out. No rain checks are accepted.
Prices, Item Stock and Condition
The price stated on the item page is the price of the item, unless there is a sale in progress. We are not Ebay. While we try to price with the market in mind, we are not bargain basement sellers. We generally do not respond to offers or haggling on items.
Once a vintage item sold out, it is gone. We are not responsible if someone buys an item before you do. However, if you are interested in a particular item that has sold out, please let us know and we'll email you if we get another one in stock.
Most the products sold on the A La Modern website are one-of-a-kind, vintage items. Because these are older items, some amount of wear should be expected. In most cases, this wear will be minimal. Occasionally, we will list items that have more damage. If this is the case, then the damage will be noted in description or pictures, and will be reflected in the price. Please read the entire description and look at all the pictures before deciding to purchase.
ReturnsSales on all items are final. We do not offer returns, exchanges or store credit on any vintage items sold through the A La Modern store. All items have been described both with photos and copy as accurately as possible. Please make sure to ask all questions BEFORE you order. We will be happy to send additional information about an item before you make your purchase.
InsuranceWe will insure orders at our discretion, depending on value and situation. In all cases, regardless of insurance, the original shipping charges are non-refundable. If you have received an item damaged in shipment, please let us know IMMEDIATELY. Any damage claims must be made within 48 hours of the package's arrival. In some cases, a USPS insurance claim form will need to be filled out - you may need to provide proof of damage and loss, usually in the form of photos.
Shipping quotes are calculated depending on location and/or country. This back and forth dialogue takes a little longer, but it allows us to give our customers more accurate information and sometimes reduces the shipping considerably.

All packages within the United States are shipped USPS Priority Mail with delivery confirmation, unless otherwise specified. We do not charge handling. We may choose to insure the package, depending on value and/or situation.
For certain items, we may suggest a different shipping method than Priority. The two most common alternatives are USPS Parcel Select (for heavier, inexpensive items) or USPS First Class (for inexpensive items under 13oz). However, if you would like these shipped Priority or another method we will be happy to do so as long as you cover any extra postage costs. Please note: for more valuable items, we may require Priority Mail and/or Signature Confirmation.
Most orders are usually shipped within 2-3 business days. If there will be a serious delay with shipping, we will let you know beforehand. We are not responsible for any shipping delays due to the carrier. Where possible, USPS Delivery Confirmation service will be included.

Most International packages will require USPS Priority Mail with delivery confirmation. This includes U.S. Territories, AFO/PFO, Canada and Mexico. Sorry, we realize that Priority rates can be expensive, but that is the primary method we can ship right now. Items that are VERY lightweight and/or inexpensive MAY qualify to be shipped by USPS First Class to countries such as to Canada, UK, Japan, Australia, etc.
Other Shipping Information
We are very careful with our packaging. However, we realize that occasionally an item may be damaged in shipping transit. In many cases, insurance will cover refunds (not including shipping) on damaged or lost items. However, we are not responsible for USPS-tracked packages that are tracked as "delivered" to your door, but are stolen or otherwise lost.
Please make sure to provide the correct address. Once an order has shipped, we will not be able to change the address until delivery is attempted and returned by USPS. If this is being sent as a gift or to an alternate address, please let us know first. If you find that you've given the wrong address, please let us know immediately, since we may not have shipped your package yet.
In all cases, original shipping charges are non-refundable. This includes packages that are refused and shipped back to us. If re-shipment is required, additional charges will be incurred.
We are non-smokers. However, because many of our items are purchased from estate sales and auctions, we can't guarantee that the previous owners were not smokers. The same goes for pet hair / dander. We do have a cat(s) - please let us know if you are allergic and we will try be extra careful with your item.
