This is an amazing set of six La Gardo Tackett designed porcelain demitasse cups and saucers that includes the original box. These were designed for Schmid International, probably in the 50s or 60s.
Tackett was a very notable modern ceramicist. Most importantly, he was the force behind Architectural Pottery whose wares are associated with the midcentury modernist movement and are highly coveted today. His production design work for Schmid is less well known, but just as beautiful.
We have never seen another Tackett / Schmid original box for these tall demitasse cups – this set would be great for a serious Tackett collector. The box has a picture of a robed figure holding up a cup and saucer set – it also features the “Tackett” signature right on the side of the box.
The porcelain cups and saucers appear to be in near perfect shape. The box has a lot of wear, however. The cups and saucers are marked with the Tackett/Schmid stamp on the back, and some of them still have original “Japan” stickers attached.
The cups measure about 3 7/8 inches tall and 1 1/4 inches wide. The saucers are about 3 1/2 inches wide.
