A wonderful studio pottery architectural style pedestal vase or planter by Ellice Johnston. She is known for co-founding Irving Place Studio in Los Angeles with Dora De Larios, as well as working in the ceramics community in Oregon notably with Clayfolk. This is a very large raised stoneware bowl vase form, muted yellow glaze on top and incised decor with brown glaze on the bottom portion. This piece would look great in a mid century modern setting with other appropriate ceramics. Marked faintly on the interior of the hollow base with "EllicE" which is how her work is often signed.
In good vintage condition, with no cracks or chips. Pops to the glaze, very light scuffing. A few metal marks. A small glaze flake off bottom rim edge possibly related to manufacturing, and some glaze misses near the bottom of foot.
Measures about 10 inches tall, 7 1/2 inches wide at top.
