Wonderful modernistic stoneware planter by Stoneware Designs West. We haven’t been able to find out too much about the company, but believe they were started in the 1960s by former employees of Robert Maxwell. More info on the Potteries of California website.
This brown and silver colored stoneware planter has two side pockets and stands almost 12 inches tall, 7.5 inches in length and 5 inches in girth. We have seen other sellers label it as “Danish Modern” and it does has a Danish modern sensibility about it – although we aren’t sure if that was the original intention. This was most definitely a California company, similar to Pottery Craft and Robert Maxwell’s output. We’ve had other planters like this one that had original ribbon still woven through the holes in front, but this one doesn’t have it.
The planter is in excellent shape with no signs of damage that we can see. We suspect it dates to the 1970s. The planter is interesting because the front has a brown painted color, while the back has a silver or gray color. It appears somewhat blotchy in places, and we aren’t certain if this is intentional or if it was supposed to be all brown, or all silver gray.
