Stoneware Figural Planter
Tagged with: california potteryceramicsplanterstoneware designs west

A wonderful modernistic stoneware planter by Stoneware Designs West. We haven’t been able to find out too much about the company, but believe they were a company started in the 1960s by former employees of Robert Maxwell. More info on the Potteries of California website.

The greenish-brown stoneware planter has two side pockets and stands almost 12 inches tall, 7.5 inches in length and 5 inches in girth. We have seen other sellers label it as “Danish Modern” and it does has a Danish modern sensibility about it – although we aren’t sure if that was the original intention. This was most definitely a California company, similar to Pottery Craft and Robert Maxwell’s output. One of the interesting things is that this particular planter has the original green ribbon still woven through the holes. We aren’t sure if that was a 3rd party addition or not.

The planter is in excellent shape with no signs of damage that we can see. We suspect it dates to the 1970s. The ribbon has started to unravel a bit from the “crown” portion of the figure – we believe this could be easily repaired (or the entire ribbon removed) but will leave that up to the buyer.
