Wonderful midcentury modern style covered casserole by Stoneware Designs West. The abstract handpainted “script” or curli-cue designs on the side are typical of the output from the company. Casserole lid is ringed and reminds us a little bit of some of the Heath Ceramics items. We believe these items are cast, though they have a definite handmade look to them.
This would fit in great with an existing collection of midcentury pottery. We haven’t been able to find out too much about the company, but believe they were a company started in the 1960s by former employees of Robert Maxwell. More info on the Potteries of California website.
Casserole is in great shape except that on the interior lip there are two large chip repairs (see photo). While they do not affect the stability of the item, and they aren’t visible at all when the lid is on, we have reduced the price accordingly. Please note that this in an extremely heavy item (over 7 pounds boxed) so shipping will be a little higher.
Marked with a typical oval foil paper sticker that reads “Handcrafted Stoneware by Designs West California U.S.A.”.
Casserole measures about 10″ in diameter and about 5 1/2″ tall.
