This is a fantastic midcentury lighter canister by Curtis Jere. We originally thought this was an Italian ceramic lighter from far away, until we saw the signature. We haven't seen another lighter like this which is signed by C Jere, and believe that this piece may be more difficult to find.
"Curtis Jere" (sometimes known as C. Jeré) is actually the name that two artists named Curtis Freiler and Jerry Fels used for their business - most people assume it's the actual name of the artist. They made art sculpture in the 1960s-70s, often using metal, rock, wood and other items. Currently, the company (sold many times, and finally bought by Artisan House) is still making metal sculpture, though they aren't produced in the United States any more. See the Wikipedia entry for further info.
This lighter is a "canister" type - the top lighter mechanism lifts off to reveal a container for storing cigarettes. Construction is orange, green, yellow and white enamel over metal. The bottom is actually composed of a cork plug. Inside of canister seems to be unfinished metal. Signature is in gold on side of lighter canister and may be a bit faded - but is still clear.
This would make a wonderful decorative piece in a midcentury modern setting, even for the non-smokers out there. We've seen quite a few different colorful enamel pieces by C Jere, but for the most part they're wall hangings involving leaves, owls and butterflies. We'd be interested to hear if anyone has more information about this piece.
In excellent vintage condition with no major damage that we can see. Bottom of cork has a bit of wear and staining, but is intact. Brass lighter portion is marked "Japan" and does have some significant tarnish from wear and age. Mechanism functions fine, but needs fuel if intended for use.
Lighter canister measures about 5 inches tall and 1 1/2" in diameter.
